My Response to Ashley
I've recently really gotten into watching the show John and Kate plus 8. I was watching one of the reruns the other night with one of my friends and the episode showed something that is commonly thought of as a "womans job". In this particular episode, John was going to cook dinner for the entire family. Kate was so nervous and kept freaking out saying she didn't want him in 'her' kitchen. Many people always think that the mother/wife should cook the meals. I know in my family my mother usually cooks our meals. It's very rare for my father to do so. Many other families I know are the same way, the women cook the meals. I thought it was a really nice episode when John cooked for the family. I think more men should cook for their families. And I also feel that the wives should allow them to without making comments. I think it's nice to take turns in the kitchen because that's how families should work. Everyone should work together. And who knows, maybe the men can actually cook better then the women!
My Response:
While growing up my mom always cooked dinner everynight for the family and cooked most of the time. On the weekends when my dad had off work my dad would cook the family breakfast to give my mom some time "off". And I always thought this way.
But now my boyfriend LOVES to cook and when I first found out I thought it was so wierd. For Christmas 2 years ago his mom bought him cooking lessons and my first thought was "Your gay". But he loves them, and hes still been taking them on and off for a while now. And he broke my thought process of traditional views in the kitchen. ( I think it helps that he is a really good cook) And a few months ago we took a class togehter on how to make pizza and it was so much fun and I really dont know why I ever thought that way before.

My Eureka Moment Week # 3

My Response to Sarah
This week didn't contain a eureka moment perse but I do have something on my mind. I just contacted my old employer for a summer job becasue I'm tired of being on unemployment. My old job, although I loved it, was in the center of a "man's world" and really puts me in a position to deal with alot of gender targeted situations. I would be working basically as a customer service rep at a electronic and appliance retailer. The entire showroom has all men salespeople, while the entire customer service staff is female. Being the minority in the building means being called "the girl at the desk" or having people directed to the "girl behind the counter." I was once an office manager for this company and even in that position I was called a "girl" instead of the manager. So it was not uncommon to have to deal with sexism from fellow employees. But worse than that-to me-is the way customers-or really people in general-view a woman in power in these situations. It was my job to handle customer service situations, yet time and time again I would be asked for another manager-who was always a man, and they would come forward only to say the same thing I said and get a satisfied response from the customer. Sometimes I wouldn't even waist my time and I would just skip to the male manager, because I already knew they won't take my word for it. I hated that part of the job. Even other women would do the same thing, and you would think a woman would trust another woman. It also always made the male manager look like the hero becasue he supposedly solved the problem. So while I look forward to getting back into work and doing what I love, I don't look forward to being in a backwards environment. Oh and did I mention that there is not a single woman top manager in this company?? In all my years there I knew more that alot of male managers over me knew. But they make sure women stay in the service relm of things. Hmmmm......
My Response:
Sarah I totally feel your pain in this situation. I'm a supervisor and whenever guests need a manager I do sometimes feel that because I am a woman they just don't take me seriously (I also think it has to do with my age), espically if its normally something a man deals with. And both of my bosses in the building were men. So whenever they needed someone higher it would always be a man. Just recently we got a new store manager who is a woman and I think it will be intresting to see if this makes any difference when customers asks for whos in charge of the store and its a woman now.
My Response to Chris
My moment of the week has to deal with how not only are women part of domestic violence, but men are also as well. This moment came after reading the chapters. I think that many times it it always portrayed as the men committing the act and not the woman. This is also something men are afraid to admit that a girl beat him up when he is supposed to be the strong masculine man. This is actually an interesting subject on my part, because a friend of mine was abused by his ex girlfriend. She had actually broke his arm and she was this petite woman. We actually joked and laughed when he told us that she did it knowing it was out of rage. WE actually didn't take it seriously. Well come to find out after months after they broke up one night he came and told us all about it. I found it really interesting. He was afraid to admit to anyone he had plenty of domestic disputes with her. I think now why so many men are afraid to admit things like these kinds of things. I think that many times media and people tend to portray the males as coming to act and hardly ever the female. Actually I can't remember ever seeing this happen. I think that men are just to ashamed to tell anyone they are getting beat up by a girl. I seriously think I would do the same thing as him. I think that guys are not as caring and comforting about the issue as the women are when there girls friends are getting beat up. I don't know. I just think it's something that is not something that is out there that much. I think it happens to more men than society thinks.
My Response:
Many men don't admit to any kind of abuse from women because women have always been viewed as the weaker sex and men the stronger ones. So when a man admits to his friends that he was abused by a women it imediately makes him look not as strong (in his eyes). and our book states that men are taught to always be competitve and always looking to be the best. So if they admit to their friends this "weakness" they inturn would be asdmiting their weakness. I feel that should not be the case though. Anyone can hurt each other and people should never be treated that way.

My Eureka Moment Week # 2
My Response To Shaina
Shaina's Post:
Last night I was watching Jon & Kate + 8 season 5 premiere along with Millions of other men, women, children, entire families, however, I was attempting to watch it from a different perspective, something that most people wouldn't want to look at. All of the scandals involving Jon cheating, Kate cheating, a pending divorce, etc., have left Jon looking like a complete villian. I thought that the show would even the score, making sure to point out that he is home with the kids while Kate is out on her book tours, however, they showed Kate struggling to care for the children alone while Jon "took the weekend off." What I felt the producers only showed Talk of, and no visual examples, is how much Kate is on the road. Whenever they showed Jon, he was distant, tired, slumped over, and often not watching the kids. However, I feel as though it is easy for them to leave huge chunks of time out where he could have looked better, more awake, and maybe they were playing a trick on us? Is it possible that Kate is more at fault for being star struck than they want us to think. There is no doubt that when I start a family I hope I could be somewhat near as organized as her, because a lifestyle like that with so many children seems really hard. However, I feel like Jon taking care of the kids wasnt shown at all and that he does more for the family than they showed. Probably because people like Kate more, but it also makes the stereotypes about men and their lack of parenting skills even more apparent. It is also negative towards women because it shows that Kate's power within their household is too strong and imposing that Jon can not handle it, he feels as though he has lost his "manhood."

My Response:I do not watch this show, but since all of the speculation about the cheating and the divorce I am forced to see this everywhere. And it's intresting that you say that she is portrayed as the spouse that is not doing anything wrong because on all the magazine covers it is her side of the story and how her husband is an ass. And I also read something that while the show was premiering that he was in a bar with two young girls living it up while she was at home with all of the children. I'm sure that the show will keep feeding into this idea because its going to help their ratings because I'm sure now people are watching the show that have never watched it before. But it is very sad that executives are portarying women like the weaker sex in this show now and that men don't care about their children. I agree with you there.
